I'm considering a switch from engineering for an oil and gas engineering consulting firm to being a Ruby on Rails developer. I've completed several tutorials and been accepted to DevBootcamp in Chicago for a nine week intensive training course. I'm confident that I'll enjoy the content (coding, problem solving, etc.) but am concerned about my work life when I begin my career as a developer. I'm a bit bored in my current role but the life balance perks are pretty great... I currently work from home, 40-45 hrs/wk, making over $100k... I don't want to give up a good thing!
So I'm looking for insight into the work environment for a Ruby on Rails developer, such as the following:
- Is pay usually salaried or by the hour?
- In searches I've found that pay ranges from $70k - $150k per year; is this accurate? How long does it take to reach the higher end?
- What is a typical work week? 40 hrs? 60 hrs? 9-5? Is working weekends common? Working from home common? Is dress typically casual?
- Is it fun?
Thanks for your help!
