I want to create an app that can log-in to my email account and sort through the emails identify failure notices/bounced emails  (I can then connect to the DB of my apps and update the user's accounts to prevent further emails going out to them).

Are there are good gems that could make this task easier?

I don't get the part about logging into your e-mail account, but it sounds like you'd like to be your own SMTP.

Setting up a server as SMTP, and then from the SMTP software connect to the same database (or create a new one, and then an API) and set the users e-mail address as bounced.

This is quite the task, and I'd not recommend it. You probably want to look into something like SendGrid for SMTP. They have a nice API from where you can grab bounced state.

I was thinking something more like this: https://github.com/m.../bounce_fetcher

Anyone have experience of using such a gem?
