I wrote this in-depth article to help people Install Rails and configure their working environment for real-world Rails development.

It goes into detail, including pointing out the importance of updating system gems at the time you install Rails.

In the article, I recommend using RVM to make it easy to use different Ruby versions and manage gems, though I also mention Chruby and rbenv as alternatives.

Great resource.

Just incase anybody is wondering on an alternate version of RVM. I suggest checking out rbenv which I've moved to recently, this article is a great help for those getting started with rbenv on Mac OS X.

The only part in that guide I link to is the bit regarding bundling to the specific repo. I'm lazy and rather use the same gems for everything and edit the actual gems if needed haha.  Bad practice some would say but I only tend to work on one or two projects at a time.

Fine article! Consider doing another article on rbenv and life would be close to perfect. :)

Here's my quick and dirty rbenv + apache setup on EC2 - in production you probably want to lock things down a bit more and set up a deploy user (rather than using the 'ubuntu' user), but I use this all the time for tossing things on the web to test.

Here's a pretty helpful resource for installing rails. http://installrails.com/

It goes step-by-step using Windows, Mac or Linux.

Best,

Chris
