Topic: Coda from Panic Software

It's Panics 10th anniversary today...and they're supposed to be launching a new app called "Coda" which they claim to be their biggest and best app ever.

Cool, I love Panic software! Can't wait to try out Coda.

Still, I can't imagine giving up TextMate.

haha...it's actually apps like these that pushed me towards mac.  THe workflow and way things work together is incredible.  Granted, I'm a photography and it's a 99% mac industry for photo tools...maybe someday PC people will come up with something as cool wink

My only question is, how well suited is Coda for a framework such as Rails?

Has anyone tried it with rails, yet?  I know it was just released, but it's something that I is making me hesitant to pick up a copy of Coda.

I haven't tried it out yet, but looks like many of its advertised features won't really help the average rails developer. For example, built in FTP support and remote editing? With Rails you should be using Subversion and deploying with that. Perhaps this is geared toward smaller mostly-static sites.

Update: After trying out the demo for a bit, I can confirm my above assumptions. This is an extremely great editor if you are just editing a mostly-static site. The built in preview, CSS editor, validator, and language-specific hints as you type make it perfect for the beginner web developer.

The useful features start dropping off the closer you get to Rails to the point that it becomes just another text editor. It's usable for Rails editing, but it doesn't hold a candle to TextMate when it comes to that. If you're just managing a static HTML site, this is the perfect tool for the job.

I agree, it's def geared towards more traditional static dev

but the concept is pretty cool, maybe in the future it will be more expansive.

I do love having terminal right there though

Meh, yeah I had the same assumptions as Ryanb. I also don't like the idea of everything being in one window. My workflow improves with having multiple windows open in a dual-monitor setup.

I agree. Although I don't have dual monitors, I like to have autotest and the development log running in two terminal windows in the background. This way I can easily see them without leaving TextMate/Safari.

Yeah, exactly. I'd definitely say this is great for a novice developer, or probably a designer. Not something a programmer should use. That is unless, you code php *snicker*.
