Topic: Recommended web host for a student project? Noob friendliness needed!

Hi there

I'm doing a rails app for my degree project and want to get it live, mainly so other people can see it.  So, my priorities for a web server are:
- cheapness (sub $10 a month)
- helpfulness (i've been ruby/railing for only about 6 weeks and have never done any prior web dev so am still fairly unsure about what i'm doing a lot of the time)
- reliability with sub-massive amounts of data/traffic (i'm not expecting to make the next twitter, though that would of course be cool)

Can anyone recommend a server?  Normally i know railsmachine get recommended but they're out of my amateur league.  Are bluehost good?  Was tempted by them.

Any advice welcome, preferably from other ex-newbies who've stumbled their way through this sort of thing before.

It is free for simple apps.

You really shouldn't look any further than Heroku given your requirements. It starts free and is far easier than learning all you would need to set up a box or VPS from scratch. Although, at some point if this is something you're interested in, it is well worth learning.

I've heard good things about Heroku, and the free part is good.  I use Dreamhost, which does okay with Rails 3.0 apps on their shared hosting.   However, I end up having to use Fastcgi to serve the app, which is slow and difficult to get working right.  You can opt for the virtual private server approach, but that will raise your monthly price above where you are hoping to be.
