I think the situation is still the same.

Beast, now becoming altered beast, is out there.
We looked at Beast -- it's a nice forum, but really lacks the administration and community management features we're looking for.
Altered Beast I hadn't of... you mean this? http://github.com/courtenay/altered_beast/tree/master
The project doesn't seem super active...
We also looked at El Dorado, but I think that project is going in a direction that doesn't really mesh with our goals (it is becoming more of a full CMS system).
We're actually playing around with vBulletin right now as we've really outgrown PunBB, in our opinion. We'd love to use a Rails-based forum, but we also believe that you should always use the best tool for the job ... right now, a more developed PHP-based forum system (like vB) is better suited to what we're looking to accomplish. ![]()

Yeah that's what I meant, I don't really know much about either apart from their existence, stumbled onto altered beast when I was looking for some examples of rSpecs to help me get moving on rspec.
Haha I wondered that at first. Then I tried to setup a forum on a rails site and realized exactly why. I ended up patching punBB into the rails app rather than rewrite. :-P
Beast is really nice forum
