It's also readily available and a good rails one hasn't been built - doesn't mean it can't be. In fact the board owner is looking for help. Rails I believe is a much more stable framework than PHP - and what with bootstrap - front end design is easy as well now too. A discussion forum and a good blog engine (with threaded comments) would be awesome as well

I have been looking for a message board application to use within my RoR centered website, HifiMaven.com. I have not been able to discover something that is very refined to the stage of the various PHP centered or Jive(java based) message board offers. I have checked out Viewpoint, Monster, and RForum. I am looking at creating bounty/fund to make a awesome message board program what do individuals think of this idea?
==============================
teakwood | teak parquet

We can't compare php and RoR. RoR is a framework based on ruby. Php is
just a programming language like ruby. So you can compare php with
ruby or RoR with a php framework (Symfony, phpCake ....).

Vietnam travel
Mekong river cruise

@diego: Beast is very nice, but not really up to snuff in certain areas we wanted for this forum.

@jbartels: Bingo. For years 37Signals even used MoveableType for their blog (they only switched to their in-house RoR-powered system earlier this year, I believe). PunBB suits us well right now, and there's no need to change to an inferior system (like Beast -- very nice, but let's face it, not quite up to PunBB) just because it's made in Ruby on Rails.

We are slowly working on our own in house system though, via a project under the direction of some of our members (namely RyanB, danger, and thabenksta).

Who's demanding free, open source solutions for anything? If there were a a RoR-based forum that matched vBulletin feature-for-feature, I'd expect to pay for it ... and would if it were well written and supported. (I own other forums running vBulletin, by the way.) I don't think I have the money to fund development of a full forum system right now, but I'm definitely not opposed to paying for software.

linoj: One of my main concerns is strong moderation controls. More or less we want something that will at least match what we have already with PunBB. We're working on something, as I've said, but it can be slow going at time as everyone who is working on it has full time jobs doing other stuff.
