As you can see, we've made a few changes around here.

We've upgraded to the new version of PUnBB in order to fix some security and performance issues.

Please note that this is a temporary fix and we have some great things planned for the future of Rails Forum. We just need a little more time to implement them, but we wanted to get the spam and performance problems taken care of right away.

We ask for your patience while we work out a few kinks left over from the upgrade (we know the code tag isn't working, we're on it!). If you encounter any problems or errors, please post then here.

Thanks.

Update: The plug-in we were using for code highlighting isn't compatible with this version of PunBB. Until we can get a fix put together, I've added the code tag to the standard BBCode parser so it will still format the code properly, you just won't have the syntax highlighting and line numbers. Sorry about that.

Tutorial October: Win an iPod shuffle in our tutorial competition!

Tutorial October: Win an iPod shuffle in the Rails Forum tutorial competition!

To celebrate our 500 member mark obtained yesterday, and in the interest of getting more good Ruby on Rails tutorials, Rails Forum is giving away an iPod shuffle to the best tutorial written between now and 12:01 AM GMT on November 1, 2006!

What do I need to do to enter?

Simple! Just post a tutorial in our Ruby on Rails Tutorials forum between now and the time above, and you'll be automatically entered!

The winner will be chosen by the Rails Forum administrators (myself, Josh, and Kelli). We will be judging tutorials based on 1. functionality, 2. usefulness, and 3. content (can we follow along easily?). Our judging will start once the final deadline passes, and we'll be done and announce a winner no later than November 15th.

What are the rules?

We have just a few simple rules for this competition:

1. No tutorial can be "redone". If it's on the forums it's off limits unless you go in a drastically different direction for a similar result.
2. Please have some sort of depth to your tutorials. A tutorial like "how to use script/plugin to install things" isn't going to get you the prize.
3. Please proofread your posts and test your code before hitting the Submit button. Massive edits after you initially post will get you disqualified.
4. This has to be a new tutorial. Don't just copy and paste something you wrote on your blog.

Other than that, you are pretty much free to do whatever you want.

What do we win?

You will win the new 1GB iPod shuffle, courtesy of Rails Forum. Everyone could use some good music when they're hacking

Who's eligible?

If we can order from Apple in your country, you can enter. Rails Forum administrators are not eligible

I have another question...

Please feel free to ask any questions in this thread and we'll be more than happy to help.

Rails Forum: The First Year

So, Peter Cooper's great blog Ruby Inside, turned one year old today, and that reminded me: this past week marked Rails Forum's one year anniversary as well!

Vinnie, Kelli, and I set up the forum on May 10th, 2006 and spent a couple of weeks skinning it and getting everything set up properly. Our first few outside members joined on May 23, 2006 (mostly people we knew who followed out signature links from SitePoint).

Since then we have grown -- a lot!

We now have over 4,000 members and over 24,000 posts, making Rails Forum the largest on the web dedicated to Ruby on Rails (at least, not counting those that act as gateways to the official RoR mailing lists ).

In our first year, Rails Forum has served over 1 million page views, and is getting about 45,000 visits per month (over 150,000 page views each month, now!). According to Alexa, we've consistently cracked the top 50,000 sites in the world (and been into the top 25,000).

These stats are really mind blowing to us. And I really want to thank all of the members who continue to make this place rock!

Very special thanks to our great moderators ryanb and danger (who joined on June 14th and 15th of last year, respectively) whose tireless work keeping this place free of spam and answering questions has really helped make Rails Forum great. We wouldn't be here without you guys!

Here's to another great year!

Rails Forum is pleased to announce Rails Work, our very own job board. We hope that Rails Work will become premier place to post Ruby on Rails-related jobs.

Jobs can be posted at Rails Work for $10 for 10 days or $25 for 30 days (best value!). BUT, to celebrate our launch, for the next 2 weeks listings will be absolutely free! Just use the special promo code: LAUNCH-PROMO when posting a new job.

You may notice that the Rails Work design looks a lot like the great Railsify plugin directory site from Rails Forum moderator, shadow.
